The Apple Newton was the 1st Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) and premiered in 1993. The Newton featured handwriting recognition which received a substantial amount of poor press on launch. The recognizer improved considerably in the next releases but it was never quite in a position to shake the bad popularity. The Newton line was discontinued by Steve Careers himself after his go back to Apple. While a lot of people still carry a poor connotation with Apple's Newton, it was an ahead-of-its-time type of device that got a hardcore fan base in its day.
